Abstract: In this book review of Das System der Metazoa (Ax 1995/1999/2001) and its English translation (Ax 1996/2000/2003), I recommend these three volumes for three reasons:
– they give morphological evidence the weight it deserves in phylogenetics,
– they illustrate that cladistic analysis does not need to mean absence of functional reasoning, and
– the heuristic value of plotting evolutionary novelties directly onto the phylogeny is considerable for students of biology.
